Wire size chart: AWG, mm², OD and colours

Gauges, outside diameters and colour codes for harness wire, each value with its source and the date we read it.

In short

An AWG size is a diameter of solid copper; mm² is a cross-section. 20 AWG is 0.518 mm² of copper, 18 AWG 0.823 mm², 16 AWG 1.31 mm²: none of them equals a metric size, so a drawing that mixes the two needs a choice, not a conversion. Outside diameters differ between wire types of the same size (thin-wall FLRY against TXL, GXL and SXL), and between makes within the same standard — use the maker's sheet for the wire you buy.

Worked example

20 AWG = 0.518 mm² · 18 AWG = 0.823 mm² · 16 AWG = 1.31 mm² · 14 AWG = 2.08 mm² · 12 AWG = 3.31 mm²

Convert

DIN 47100 core colours (1–44)

For multi-core cables: one colour for cores 1–10, base colour plus stripe or ring from core 11. The first colour is the base. DIN 47100 was withdrawn in 1998 and is still widely used.

Writing a two-colour wire

How sources write a base colour with a stripe. Where a source says so, the first colour is the base.

Written asMeans
WHGNwhite base with green stripe or ring (DIN 47100 core 13)
base colour + ring colourfirst colour = base colour of core insulation, second or third = printed ring colour
GNYEgreen-yellow (a single IEC 60757 code of its own)
BKWHtwo IEC letter codes written together in an order code (German SWWS)
WHITE/BLACKslash between two full colour names (hook-up wire colour list)
BLACK WITH WHITE STRIPEbase colour named first, stripe colour after 'with ... stripe'
YRyellow with red stripe (letter of base colour first, then stripe)

Questions

Is 18 AWG the same as 0.75 mm²?
No. 18 AWG is 0.823 mm² of copper; 0.75 mm² lies between 19 AWG (0.653 mm²) and 18 AWG. Using one for the other is a decision for the drawing's owner, not a conversion: the terminal's wire range and the current capacity both depend on it.
Why do two 0.5 mm² wires have different diameters?
The insulation. FLRY-B is a thin-wall PVC wire; TXL, GXL and SXL are XLPE wires with thin, medium and thick walls. The outside diameter decides the seal and the grommet, so take it from your wire's own sheet.
Which colour code should my wire list use?
IEC 60757 letter codes (BK, BN, RD …) are short and unambiguous in every language. Zorowire's importer also reads German, Romanian and Polish colour names and the old DIN 47002 abbreviations.
Is the AWG table for stranded wire too?
It is the AWG definition: solid round copper. A stranded conductor of the same gauge has its own area, given in the wire maker's sheet.
